How Do I Clean Carpets?

One question we are often asked is how do I clean my carpets?. Our carpet cleaning for Norwich service covers Norwich and the surrounding areas. With many happy customers and lots of experience. We thought it would be nice to share some of our knowledge for people who want to give it a go.

What do I need?

This may sound obvious. But let’s run through what is needed to get you started with carpet cleaning.

  • Good vacuum
  • Carpet cleaning machine
  • Cleaning chemicals
  • Spot cleaner (if required)
  • Deodoriser (if required)

Make sure you have a good vacuum. As with most things. Three quarters of the work in the preparation. So make sure your vacuum is empty, blockage free and you will also want the attachment for going along the edges. When we do our carpet cleaning for Norwich we use a cylinder vacuum. But the choice is yours.

Carpet cleaning machines come in all shapes and sizes. They all (more or less) do the same thing. Use a mixture of warm water and chemical. Inject this into the carpet to remove the dirt. Then extract the dirty water through a vacuum. There are machines out there that are very advanced and will have heater tanks and adjustable pressure settings. If you are looking to turn professional then these are great. You may not need these features if you are just looking to freshen up the lounge. Have a look round. They can be hired daily or weekly and come with hand tools. Perfect for cleaning upholstery and stairs.

Cleaning chemicals are often sold by the hire company. You will need a good general cleaner. You may also need a spot cleaner for any stains. Depending on the type you get you also need a defoamer. This is added to the chemical solution to stop it foaming. Ask at the hire company and they will point you in the right direct. For the best cleaning products you can check out the range on

Let’s get to work

Our cleaning process involves three steps.

Step 1. Vacuum the carpets. Making sure the carpets are free from debris. Paying attention to the edges, take your time. Make sure the all hair is removed. Both pet and human.

Step 2. Pre-treat any stains. There are lots of spot cleaning chemicals out there. So if a stain looks like it will be trouble. Give it some pre-treatment to make sure it comes out.

Step 3. Time to get cleaning. The machines we use have a wand. So we can give the entire carpet a spray. We can also use the wand to give those troublesome stains a good scrub. Starting in the furthest corner. We clean the carpet whilst working our way out of the room.
